Tech giants Microsoft and Alphabet, parent company of Google, unveiled their quarterly earnings reports on January 30, highlighting significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.
Throughout the previous year, AI emerged as a focal point in the tech industry, with its global market size reaching $196.6 billion in 2023. Both Microsoft and Google positioned themselves as leaders in AI development, introducing their own advanced chatbots.
Microsoft experienced robust sales growth in the final quarter of the year, with AI tools playing a pivotal role. The company reported an 18% year-on-year revenue increase from September to December, surpassing $60 billion. Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, emphasized the company’s transition from discussing AI to implementing it at scale, noting its widespread integration across their technology stack and its role in attracting new customers and driving productivity gains across sectors.
These impressive results coincided with Microsoft’s ascension to the world’s most valuable public company, boasting a $3 trillion valuation, surpassing Apple.
In addition to AI, Microsoft witnessed a 30% year-on-year rise in sales of its cloud computing service, Azure, exceeding industry analysts’ expectations. Overall, the company’s Q4 profits surged by 33% year-on-year, totaling $21.9 billion. Microsoft kicked off 2024 by launching the pro-version of its AI chatbot Copilot, equipped with advanced capabilities such as custom GPT creation and Office integration. However, the company faced a significant copyright lawsuit against the New York Times and OpenAI.
Similarly, Alphabet leveraged its AI integrations as a key driver of its Q4 success. Sundar Pichai, Alphabet’s CEO, expressed satisfaction with the strength of Google Search and highlighted growth in YouTube and Cloud, attributing their success to AI investments and innovation.
Alphabet reported consolidated revenue of $86 billion for Q4, marking a 13% year-over-year increase. Ruth Porat, Alphabet’s president and chief investment officer, affirmed the company’s commitment to restructuring its cost base to support new growth opportunities.
Despite its success, Google announced plans to cut jobs at the beginning of the year to achieve ambitious goals, including advancements in AI. The company introduced “Lumiere,” a realistic AI text-to-video generator, signaling continued innovation in AI-driven technologies.
