Report: Google considering paid AI search features, subscription model in Sight

Google is exploring the possibility of introducing premium features powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI) into its search engine, according to a report from the Financial Times on April 3. While this move would mark the first time a core Google product is behind a paywall, the traditional search engine would remain free of charge, and advertisements would still appear alongside search results, even for subscribers.

The tech giant is reportedly considering various options, including incorporating AI-powered search features into its premium subscription services, such as the Gemini AI assistant in Gmail and Docs. Although Google primarily relies on advertising for monetization, it already offers subscription plans with access to features like the Gemini AI assistant. However, these subscriptions currently do not affect the search experience.

Google Search has been free since its launch in the early 2000s, but the company may be exploring different means of monetization. With increasing competition in the field of AI, many tech companies are striving to bring new products to the market.

While Google has been experimenting with AI-driven search tools, integrating them into the primary search engine has been delayed due to the adoption of features from its experimental “search generative experience.” However, AI queries require more computing power, which can be costly compared to general queries, making it potentially unprofitable to offer the “Search Generative Experience” for free.

A Google spokesperson clarified that the company currently has no plans for an ad-free search experience: “We’re not working on or considering an ad-free search experience. As we’ve done many times before, we’ll continue to build new premium capabilities and services to enhance our subscription offerings across Google.”

In February, Google introduced a new paid tier to its consumer subscription service, Google One, which provides access to its latest AI model, Gemini. Subscribers to the Google One AI Premium tier can use advanced features like the Gemini chatbot and access the generative AI model in services such as Gmail and Google Docs.

Google, known for pioneering the technology behind the current AI surge, faces competition from other industry players, including OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and Microsoft.
