Swiss National Bank Vice President called Bitcoin “interesting”

Switzerland is known for its support towards the crypto community. In a recent interview, The Vice President of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) Martin Schlegel portrayed the same emotions. Schlegel was asked to finish the Swiss presenter’s phrase, “I consider Bitcoin…” to which Schlegel replied “A very interesting concept”. This statement has caused quite a stir in the crypto industry.

Surprisingly, Vice President Schlegel’s remark is different from the Swiss National Bank’s first on Bitcoin. During the SNB’s April 2022 General Meeting, SNB chairman Thomas Jordan expressed his thoughts on the possibility of adding Bitcoin to the central bank’s foreign reserves. This was preceded by two open letters from the financial services firm Bitcoin Suisse, both promoting cryptocurrency investing. The corporation requested the development of a framework “to be able to acquire and hold Bitcoin for monetary and exchange rate purposes if needed.”

Since 2016, Switzerland has been at the forefront of promoting cryptocurrency for financial transfers. Unlike many other nations, Switzerland treats cryptocurrencies as an asset class rather than a security, addressing issues surrounding the ownership and transfer of virtual currencies similarly to different asset classes such as real estate or gold. Furthermore, designating cryptocurrencies as an asset class puts to rest concerns about the classification of crypto as a security in Switzerland.

Even though this was his sole remark about Bitcoin, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the Swiss National Bank’s present position. The comment suggests that the SNB is interested in the technology and its possible applications.

Unlike other economic mammoths like the USA or UK, Switzerland has shown a strong affinity towards digital currency. The comment is important since neither the US Federal Reserve (Fed) nor the European Central Bank (ECB) would concede that the world’s most popular cryptocurrency is an “interesting concept.” Instead, ECB President Christine Lagarde described Bitcoin as “worthless” and a “speculative investment with no intrinsic value.”

Just recently, PostFinance, Switzerland’s fifth-largest financial services firm, announced that it will begin providing access to cryptocurrencies to its customers. Sygnum Bank, an authorised digital asset services company, has joined forces with the bank. The bank realised the demands of the customers related to the digital currency along with recognizing the potential of the same.

These recent movements come as a positive sign from the Swiss financial industry. The country has progressive laws and regulations towards the crypto industry. It lies in contrast with countries like the US which are generating a harsh climate for the crypto industry.
