Plagiarism or forking? Shiba Inu surrounded by controversy

Block.one exits Silvergate stakes, says ‘no exposure’

The Shiba Inu group is on the verge of significant controversy. Shibarium, Shiba Inu’s layer-2 scaling solution, is causing a stir in the cryptocurrency industry. Shibarium’s beta version was launched on March 11 2023, and today, additional technical data like the Chain ID, RPC nodes, block explorer, faucet, and bridge were disclosed, which gave basis to the claim that the code is a copy.

Shibairum’s origins are being debated on the project’s Discord server, with community members saying that it was a copy of the Rinia chain. On Discord’s Bone channel today, moderators and SHIB investors exchanged messages. The complaint was initially made on Shiba Inu’s official Discord channel by high-ranking community member Steve, who is also a member of SHIB’s Growth Team.

Rinia blockchain, launched in December 2022 uses chain ID 917, the same as the Shibarium’s beta testnet, which caused the raising suspicions. Trophias, one of the moderators, claims that Shiberium is utilising Rinia’s genesis file. According to Trophias, Shiberium failed to modify the chain ID while altering the title of the genesis file from Rinia.

“Why is it that it looks like the Shibarium testnet has taken the Rinia testnet genesis file and changed the name from Renia. But forgot to change the chain ID,” a user named Steve said on Discord.

A testnet blockchain is one that was built specifically for programmers to test new technologies. It assists in the prevention of any interruptions, malfunctions, or damage to the main blockchain network. Testnets are also used to simulate market conditions or to experiment with the development of fresh cryptocurrencies. Testnets help in the detection of faults or system issues, as well as security loopholes that unwanted parties can potentially exploit.

Furthermore, the incident began when a Twitter user dubbed ‘Rancune’ released screenshots of the Discord discussions. The issue suggests that the Shibarium beta testnet may have utilised the same Chain ID as another blockchain. They even uploaded screenshots from the Discord thread of Shytoshi Kusama’s answer, which they called ‘vague’ and claimed did not address anything.

Kusama has since reacted to the original messages, claiming that an attempt was made to undermine the project. He also  humorously, added, “so sad to see what so many of my former friends have become for greed.”

Shiba Inu moderators and other investors were eager to reject the code controversy. a user named JesusM on Discord stated that code gets forked all the time and there is no proof that the same happened this time. Another user, Justinlime, chimed in, stating that layer-2 blockchains use different codes, which is typical in open software. Kosener, among other notable community members, stated that blockchains may run independently with the same chain id. Yet, he recognised that adding both chains to MetaMask may cause issues with some dApps.

Shiba Inu (SHIB) prices have dropped to $0.00001056 at the time of writing with an overall drop of 5.6% in the last 24 hours as a result of the claims. The drama has also had an impact on BONE dropping almost 14%  and LEASH dropping almost 10% in the same span.
