Nubank’s integration of the Bitcoin Lightning Network is part of a strategic partnership with Lightspark, a leading provider of blockchain solutions. This collaboration leverages Lightspark’s tools to optimize transaction success rates and liquidity management, enhancing Nubank’s end-to-end transaction experiences through blockchain technology.
With the Lightning Network integration, Nubank customers gain the ability to perform everyday payments, transfers, and international purchases using Bitcoin (BTC). This initiative underscores Nubank’s commitment to innovation and enhancing digital banking services. Thomaz Fortes, Executive Director of Nubank Cripto, highlighted the institution’s dedication to providing efficient customer solutions.
“The future integration of the Lightning Network reflects Nu’s ongoing commitment to delivering more efficient services with increased speed and reduced costs through blockchain technology,” Fortes emphasized.
David Marcus, CEO and co-founder of Lightspark, echoed Fortes’ sentiment, expressing excitement about introducing the Lightning Network to Nu’s 100 million customers.
“We’re thrilled to empower Nubank in advancing their crypto solutions,” Marcus stated.
In addition to the Lightning Network, the partnership with Lightspark will introduce Universal Money Addresses (UMAs), designed akin to email addresses for money transfers. This feature simplifies financial transactions for Nubank’s users. While specific product details are not disclosed, Nubank has hinted at forthcoming announcements in the near future.
Nubank’s recent crypto-related expansions are in sync with the current trends in the Brazilian market. A report by research firm Kaiko highlights significant growth in the Brazilian crypto market this year.

From January to early May 2024, Brazilian real-denominated crypto trading volumes soared to $6 billion. This surge solidifies Brazil’s prominent role in the Latin American crypto market and underscores growing interest in stablecoins, Bitcoin, and other cryptocurrencies.
