Pudgy Penguins, a renowned NFT project, has announced the upcoming alpha release of “Pudgy World,” a Web3 game utilizing the Ethereum Layer 2 network zkSync Era. The alpha launch is scheduled for Q1 2024, marking a significant expansion of Pudgy Penguins from NFT collectibles to a comprehensive entertainment and lifestyle brand.
In this immersive Web3 game, players can explore an open world, customize their unique penguin characters, engage in story-driven journeys, and interact with one another. The alpha release aims to be a pioneering fusion of entertainment intellectual property (IP) and zero-knowledge (ZK) blockchain technology, representing a crucial step toward wider adoption of Web3 technology.
To ensure the success of the game, the Pudgy Penguins team selected zkSync as the appropriate blockchain, emphasizing reliability, accessibility, and scalability. Michael Lee, SVP of Growth at Matter Labs, noted that Pudgy World utilizes zkSync’s ZK technology to unlock new business models and gaming experiences, akin to the transformative shift the gaming industry experienced with mobile games.
Notably, Pudgy World will be available to all adventurous gamers, including Pudgy Penguins NFT holders and Pudgy Toy owners. Ownership of an NFT or toy is not mandatory to access the alpha version, but holders may enjoy certain benefits. Pudgy Penguin toy owners can claim unique traits for their digital Forever Pudgy Penguin character by scanning the QR code accompanying each toy.
While the alpha launch won’t facilitate trading between users initially, players can only receive returns from the original sale. However, a later phase of Pudgy World will introduce trading and enable players to participate in the in-game economy.
Pudgy Penguins CEO Luca Netz highlighted the user-friendly approach, stating that playing with Pudgy Toys doesn’t require knowledge of the underlying blockchain technology, marking a significant advancement for the Web3 and NFT space.
The collaboration between Pudgy Penguins and Walmart is also emphasized, with the joint development teams aiming to welcome millions of gamers into Web3, irrespective of their experience with NFTs or cryptocurrency. Pudgy Penguins previously launched its toy line in over 2,000 Walmart stores across the US in September.
