Mesh and Reown Collaborate to Ensure Bitcoin Wallet Verification for Travel Rule

Mesh, a U.S.-based fintech startup backed by PayPal Ventures, has entered into a strategic partnership with Reown (formerly WalletConnect) to introduce wallet ownership verification for Bitcoin transactions. This new feature, aimed initially at UTXO-based assets like Bitcoin, will help crypto businesses comply with the European Banking Authority’s (EBA) upcoming Travel Rule guidelines, set to take effect on December 30.

Addressing Compliance Challenges

In a press release dated November 11, Mesh highlighted that the wallet ownership verification feature would address key compliance challenges posed by the Travel Rule, which mandates that crypto businesses collect and share specific customer data for transactions over a threshold—typically $1,000. The regulation, introduced by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), aims to curb money laundering and other illicit activities in the crypto space.

Mesh co-founder and CEO Bam Azizi noted the significant market demand for solutions that can ensure compliance with the Travel Rule, especially as businesses face pressure to exchange secure data between various service providers. “Wallet interoperability will be key as we move forward,” Azizi added.

A Forward-Thinking Partnership

Reown’s CEO, Jess Houlgrave, emphasized the growing importance of the Travel Rule in the crypto industry, stating that forward-looking organizations would be well-positioned to lead the way in adapting to these regulations. By partnering with Reown, Mesh aims to streamline wallet verification processes, enhancing the security and regulatory adherence of Bitcoin transactions.

Mesh’s Growth and Funding

Mesh, founded in 2020 by Bam Azizi and Adam Israel, has seen rapid growth in the fintech space. In September 2023, the company raised $22 million in a Series A funding round, led by Money Forward, with additional support from Galaxy and Samsung Next. Mesh’s commitment to ensuring compliance with global regulatory standards has made it an attractive investment for companies like PayPal Ventures, which also contributed to the firm’s growth through investments in its PYUSD stablecoin.

Looking Ahead

As the Travel Rule continues to evolve, Mesh’s wallet ownership verification service, powered by its partnership with Reown, positions the company as a key player in the ongoing effort to ensure security and regulatory compliance in the global crypto ecosystem.
