Insight from Recent Report: Binance loses market share in spot trading for the 7th straight month

Binance, one of the world’s major cryptocurrency exchanges, continues to face challenges and a decline in market share, largely attributed to regulatory issues in the United States. According to a report from cryptocurrency data provider CCData, Binance’s spot market share has dwindled for the seventh consecutive month, with September 2023 witnessing another drop.

In August, Binance held a 38.5% market share in the spot trading sector, but this figure slipped to 34.3% in September. A notable contrast from January 2023, when Binance commanded a significant 55.2% share of the spot market.

The decline hasn’t been limited to spot trading, as Binance also saw its market share in the derivatives market decrease. In August, the exchange had a 53.5% share, which slid to 51.5% in September. At the beginning of the year, Binance dominated the derivatives market with a share exceeding 62%.

Jacob Joseph, a research analyst at CCData, suggests that Binance’s regulatory challenges in the United States aren’t the sole cause for the market share drop. He believes that the discontinuation of Binance’s zero-fee trading promotion for major trading pairs has also played a role in this decline.

Furthermore, Binance has been strategically winding down its operations in key markets this year. In September, the exchange announced its complete withdrawal from the Russian market, selling its local business to CommEx exchange, a newly-established platform with undisclosed ownership. Russia had been a significant market for Binance, with Russian users accounting for nearly 7% of the exchange’s overall traffic.

As Binance faces a multifaceted challenge, including regulatory hurdles and strategic market exits, its market share in both spot and derivatives trading continues to dwindle, marking a significant shift in the cryptocurrency exchange landscape.
