Indonesia Teams Up with Binance and Tokocrypto to Address Crypto Scams

Binance’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and its Indonesian subsidiary, Tokocrypto, have partnered with Indonesia’s Criminal Investigation Agency, Bareskrim, to address rising cryptocurrency fraud in the region. This collaborative effort has led to the arrest of multiple suspects and the seizure of approximately $200,000 in fraudulent funds.

Bareskrim, the criminal investigation agency of Indonesia’s national police, is tasked with investigating major crimes, including financial fraud and cybercrime. Earlier this month, Tokocrypto secured a Physical Crypto Asset Trader (PFAK) license from Indonesia’s commodity regulator, Bappebti, further solidifying its role in the local crypto market.

Investigation Targets “Pig Butchering” Scams

The investigation was initiated after Bareskrim identified a suspected crypto trading website operating as a front for fraudulent activities associated with a scam technique known as “pig butchering.” This type of scam involves long-term deception where fraudsters manipulate victims into making substantial investments, only to abscond with their funds.

A recent mid-year report from Chainalysis highlighted a significant rise in pig butchering scams within the cryptocurrency market in 2024. The fraudulent website was found to facilitate illegal transactions, prompting immediate action from Bareskrim. As a result, law enforcement arrested several individuals linked to managing accounts used for laundering the stolen funds.

During the investigation, authorities seized over 50 mobile phones, multiple local bank cards, and banking apps from the suspects. Bareskrim investigators discovered wallet addresses likely controlled by the suspects, supported by evidence gathered from their Telegram communications.

Effective Collaboration with Crypto Exchanges

Despite the suspects’ refusal to cooperate, forensic analysis revealed critical evidence, including crypto wallet addresses and relevant chat records. Bareskrim reached out to Tokocrypto for assistance, and due to the case’s complexity, Tokocrypto referred the investigation to Binance’s FIU, which specializes in tracking illicit crypto activities.

Nils Andersen Röed, Head of Binance FIU, emphasized the importance of open communication channels with global law enforcement agencies. “We were able to connect with Bareskrim, leading to valuable actions. By working together, we can leverage our combined expertise to effectively track and seize illicit funds, ensuring that the cryptocurrency ecosystem remains secure and trustworthy,” he stated.

This partnership underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance the security of the cryptocurrency market in Indonesia and combat fraud in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
