Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research, has been sentenced to two years in prison for her involvement in the downfall of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The sentencing took place on September 24 at the United States Southern District of New York, where Ellison appeared before Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan federal court.
Judge Highlights Ellison’s Cooperation with Prosecutors
Judge Kaplan praised Ellison’s cooperation with prosecutors as “remarkable,” but expressed concern that her remorse and assistance should not serve as a “get out of jail free card” in such a serious case, according to reports from Reuters.
Ellison had a personal relationship with FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who was recently sentenced to 25 years in prison for embezzling over $8 billion from the exchange’s customers. Her sentencing follows a plea deal in which she admitted to charges of wire fraud and money laundering. As part of her cooperation, she testified against Bankman-Fried, revealing crucial details about the fraudulent operations.
In addition to her prison term, Ellison has been ordered to forfeit assets exceeding $11 billion, although this amount could increase if further restitution is required.
Key Role in Bankman-Fried’s Conviction
Ellison’s testimony was instrumental in securing Bankman-Fried’s conviction. He was found guilty of orchestrating a massive fraud by misappropriating customer funds for risky investments, funding extravagant lifestyles, and making political donations.
In a bid to undermine Ellison’s credibility, Bankman-Fried’s team released excerpts from her personal diary to The New York Times prior to his trial. Earlier this month, his legal team also filed a request for a new trial, arguing that he was denied a fair hearing during his criminal proceedings. They claimed that federal prosecutors were more focused on generating headlines than ensuring a just trial.
