El Salvador Falls Behind as Poland Rises to Top in Bitcoin ATM Rankings

Poland has overtaken El Salvador to become the fifth-largest hub for Bitcoin ATMs worldwide, with a total of 219 active machines as of January 27, 2025. This marks a significant leap for Poland, which has been on a four-month installation spree, adding 24 new crypto ATMs since October 2024.

Poland’s recent surge in Bitcoin ATM installations places it ahead of El Salvador, which has remained stagnant at 215 machines despite an impressive head start. The only countries with larger Bitcoin ATM networks than Poland are the United States, Canada, Australia, and Spain.

Poland’s Growing Crypto ATM Network

Poland’s rapid growth can be attributed to its consistent addition of new machines. In just January 2025, the country installed 12 more Bitcoin ATMs, with more expected by the end of the month. This ongoing expansion underscores Poland’s growing role in the global cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Meanwhile, other top countries, including Canada, Spain, and Australia, continue to see steady increases in the number of active crypto ATMs month over month, according to data from Bitcoin ATM Radar.

El Salvador: Stagnant Growth Despite Early Adoption

El Salvador, which once stood as the third-largest Bitcoin ATM hub in the world with 215 machines in October 2022, has not seen significant growth in its Bitcoin ATM network since then. This contrasts with the rapid expansions happening in other regions. Cointelegraph reached out to Salvadoran authorities to understand their plans for advancing Bitcoin adoption further, but details remain unclear.

While the US and Canada lead the global Bitcoin ATM network, with tens of thousands of active machines, El Salvador’s slower pace in expanding its crypto ATM infrastructure has allowed countries like Poland to move ahead.

Global Bitcoin ATM Landscape

As of now, the top 10 countries with the largest Bitcoin ATM networks are:

  1. United States – 30,780 ATMs (80.8% of global total)
  2. Canada – 3,062 ATMs (8%)
  3. Australia – 1,389 ATMs (3.6%)
  4. Spain – 276 ATMs (0.7%)
  5. Poland – 219 ATMs (0.6%)
  6. El Salvador – 215 ATMs (0.6%)
  7. Hong Kong – 196 ATMs (0.5%)
  8. New Zealand – 191 ATMs (0.5%)
  9. Germany – 173 ATMs (0.5%)
  10. Puerto Rico – 162 ATMs (0.4%)

Although crypto ATMs do not directly influence Bitcoin adoption in a given country, they play a vital role in improving access to cryptocurrency, especially for the unbanked. They also serve as grassroots exposure points for citizens who may not have traditional banking services.

Regulators have raised concerns about the potential misuse of crypto ATMs, particularly in money laundering and terrorism financing. Nevertheless, the continued expansion of crypto ATMs highlights their importance in enhancing accessibility to digital assets.

Global Crypto ATM Growth

There are currently about 38,100 active crypto ATMs worldwide, spread across 65 countries, and operated by 356 operators. Australia has experienced the most consistent growth, and in April 2024, the country joined the ranks of the U.S. and Canada with over 1,000 active Bitcoin ATMs.
