Crypto Industry to Fundraise $100,000 for Kamala Harris' Crypto Policy Influence

A coalition of cryptocurrency industry leaders is organizing a fundraiser to support U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, aiming to influence her stance on cryptocurrency if she wins the presidential election. The event, set for September 13 in Washington, D.C., has a fundraising goal of $100,000, with tickets priced between $500 and $5,000, according to Reuters.

The Blockchain Foundation is leading the initiative, signaling support for Harris over her rival, Donald Trump, despite Harris’s relatively low-key position on cryptocurrency. This effort reflects the crypto community’s desire to impact future policy under a potential Harris administration.

Harris Ahead of Trump in Polls

Currently, Harris holds a narrow 3.2% lead over Trump in national polls, as reported by FiveThirtyEight. This lead has persisted since September 1, following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not seek reelection and his endorsement of Harris.

Cleve Mesidor, executive director of the Blockchain Foundation, stated that the fundraiser aims to highlight the significance of cryptocurrency to Democrats, especially with a new administration potentially on the horizon. Mesidor noted that the event could foster discussions on how a Harris administration might support the crypto sector and enhance access to capital for marginalized communities.

Challenges and Industry Reactions

The crypto industry has faced regulatory hurdles under the current administration, with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) taking action against major firms for alleged securities violations. In response, companies like Coinbase and Ripple have invested a combined $120 million in 2024 to sway the election through super political action committees like Fairshake, which has opposed Harris’ Democratic Party.

Despite these challenges, the Harris campaign has engaged with the crypto industry, holding meetings with executives in August and July. Harris’ senior campaign adviser, Brian Nelson, has suggested that Harris supports policies that encourage the growth of emerging technologies, including cryptocurrency.

Looking Ahead

Industry leaders remain hopeful about the prospects of favorable crypto policies under the next administration, regardless of the winner. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong expressed optimism that both major party candidates will adopt supportive stances on cryptocurrency.

Though Harris did not attend the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, her Democratic supporters have emphasized the importance of avoiding partisan divides over crypto. In contrast, Trump has criticized Harris for her perceived opposition to cryptocurrency, pointing to her connections with the Biden administration.

House lawmakers, led by Representative Nickel, have urged the Democratic Party to adopt a more progressive stance on digital assets. In a letter to Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, they argued that Harris has an opportunity to redefine the party’s image regarding digital assets.

The first presidential debate between Harris and Trump, scheduled for September 10, may provide further insights into their positions on cryptocurrency policy.
