OpenAI has made a significant announcement, revealing that ChatGPT can now browse the web to incorporate real-time information into its responses. This update, shared in a September 27 post on X (formerly Twitter), is a substantial leap in enhancing ChatGPT’s knowledge base.
However, there’s a catch: the web browsing feature is currently limited to Plus and Enterprise subscribers using the GPT-4 model. OpenAI has promised to roll it out to all users in the near future, but it hasn’t specified whether this will include non-premium users with GPT-4 or if it will extend to the GPT 3.5 model as well. OpenAI has not provided further clarification on this matter
Before this update, ChatGPT faced a knowledge limitation, with its data base frozen at September 2021, marking the point when it was essentially finalized for production. This limitation led to an ever-widening gap between its knowledge and real-time information.
OpenAI had previously conducted testing to implement web browsing with ChatGPT, reporting both successes and setbacks. In June 2023, there were reports of beta versions of ChatGPT with web browsing being used to bypass paywalls. However, it also had some issues, such as occasionally generating inaccurate information by conflating recent and historical data.
This web browsing update is part of a series of enhancements for ChatGPT. Just a few days before, on September 25, OpenAI had announced a multimodal update for the chatbot. This update allows ChatGPT, including GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, to understand spoken queries in plain language and respond in five different voices. Furthermore, it can now process and interpret images.
OpenAI has been actively advancing its AI capabilities, not only with ChatGPT but also with the recent introduction of DALL-E 3, the latest iteration of its image-generation AI.
With these continuous updates, there is anticipation building for OpenAI’s inaugural developer’s conference, OpenAI DevDay, scheduled for November 6 in San Francisco. It remains to be seen what additional innovations and developments the company will unveil at this event.
