Botev Plovdiv FC, Bulgaria’s oldest football club, has made a game-changing move by integrating Bitcoin and the Lightning Network as payment options for its fans. These cryptocurrency options will be available at the club’s fan shops and stands during matches in the Bulgarian Parva Liga, and there are plans to extend their use to ticketing and the online store. The club’s president, Anton Zingarevich, emphasized the potential of the Lightning Network and its convenience for fans.
This innovative step was made possible through a partnership with BTCPay Server, known for its secure and open-source Bitcoin payment processing. The payment hardware was provided by CryptoDesk.bg in collaboration with Bitcoinize.com, who supplied the point-of-sale devices.
Botev Plovdiv FC has not only embraced Bitcoin but also revitalized its online presence, launching English social media channels and joining Nostr, a decentralized protocol for censorship-resistant social media. Their efforts align with a global trend of sports teams and clubs adopting cryptocurrency to enhance fan engagement and club success.
The adoption of Bitcoin by football clubs, including the world’s oldest, Botev Plovdiv, follows a pattern of increased cryptocurrency integration within the sports industry. Real Bedford, a UK-based football club, was the first football club in the world to integrate Bitcoin, and other clubs are now following suit to broaden awareness and harness the benefits of cryptocurrency.
Peter McCormack, chairman of Real Bedford, praised Botev Plovdiv’s move and highlighted the responsible financial foundations that Bitcoin offers. He believes that more sports teams, beyond football clubs, will continue to adopt this “cheat code” for their long-term success and sustainability. He is even hosting a conference in 2024 called “Cheat Code” to delve into the potential of Bitcoin adoption.
On a special note, Botev Plovdiv FC announced their support for Bitcoin on Bitcoin white paper day, emphasizing their dedication to cryptocurrency adoption and celebrating this significant step toward integrating digital currencies into the world of football.
