Sony Interactive Entertainment published a patent titled “NFT Framework for Transferring and Using Digital Assets Between Games Platforms” on Thursday, March 16, 2023. Sony is developing a framework for using non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain technology in video games in the latest filing. It also covers consoles created by Microsoft or Nintendo, VR headsets, AR headsets, PCs, and other devices that are cross-generational and cross-platform.
This patent was first submitted in May 2021 and was published on Thursday. “Tracking Unique In-Game Digital Assets Using Tokens on a Distributed Ledger” was the title of the patent. In-game objects or characters, as well as digital recordings of gaming events, such as video clips or photos, made up the digital assets of the patent. Moreover, the patent contained several drawings illustrating the method of tracking changes in ownership, visual appearance, or metadata.
According to the patent, current methods are technologically insufficient for gamers to utilise their assets across several games and platforms. NFTs, on the other hand, might improve a game’s functionality by allowing players to utilise an asset while solely transferring its rights to others. Sony’s recent filing also mentions the ability for gamers to transfer their in-game progress to other games via NFTs. Resulting owners can then begin the game where the previous owner left off, with the same assets, points, and level.
They also plan on looking into a variety of use cases, including NFT-locked gaming, limited-use in-game activities, and others. The patent application highlights the company’s eagerness to develop a strong NFT framework that allows players to acquire or transfer ownership utilising digital assets, among other benefits. Furthermore, the patent suggests a technique for rewarding chosen players using NFTs. For example, gamers who complete a level first might receive a unique NFT that offers them in-game bonuses or unlocks exclusive in-game products.
It is crucial to highlight that the mere existence of this intellectual property does not imply that it will be implemented. Sony Interactive Entertainment, the division in charge of gaming-related research and development, files about a thousand patent applications each year. It remains to be seen how Sony will incorporate this technology into future games and platforms, but it is evident that the corporation is actively finding novel methods to improve its consumers’ gaming experiences.
Money flows in just one direction in these traditional games: players must pay money to gain access to in-game content and exclusive features. Blockchain-enabled games, many of which are decentralised apps (dApps), on the other hand, place a greater emphasis on providing value for players. It enables users to maximise the utility and value of assets obtained through in-game purchases, routine gaming, or promotional events. Popular NFT games with their own virtual assets and currencies include plinterlands, Sandbox, and Axie Infinity.
